Boatmans Cabin, London

We were commissioned to design, make and install multiple bespoke furniture items for the boatmans cabin of a historical narrowboat. The brief was to give a modern twist on the traditional cabin creating a functional space to relax and entertain whilst providing a flexible space for guests to stay, occasional office use and additional storage.

The items include a pull out double sofa bed, a wardrobe with a fold down desk in the door, shelving and seating area next to a stove. The furniture is assembled from a series of standalone elements allowing for both easier installation and for items to be moved if necessary. All elements had to be carefully sized and located to ensure access to the boats bilges below the floorboards.

A combination of birch plywood and orange valchromat were used to create a light and warm relaxing feel, whilst adding a pop of colour which is contrasted by the dark blue cushions. The shapes of the recessed handles were inspired by patterns forming on the surface of water, a subtle homage to the surrounding environment of the canal.
